On Thursday 5 June, our brilliant ambassador Anton Du Beke hosted his third annual golf day in aid of The Sick Children’s Trust. Set against the stunning backdrop of Burhill Golf Club in leafy Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, the event once again proved a resounding success, raising an incredible £35,000 to help keep families with a seriously ill child in hospital together.
Despite numerous showers, the atmosphere was full of cheer as golfers arrived early for breakfast before tackling 18 holes on the prestigious Old Course, designed by Willie Park Jr – a two-time Open champion and world-renowned course architect – in 1907. The round included a customary stop at the gin station, generously supported by the wonderful people at Gilpin’s Gin and Fever-Tree. After their round, guests — including golf commentator James Gregg — gathered in the clubhouse lounge for drinks before heading into the Barnes Wallis room for a gourmet barbecue ahead of the much-anticipated prize-giving and auction.
Generous prizes included Fortnum & Mason hampers for the winning team, with runners-up receiving Wedgwood putters and TaylorMade balls, while third place took home TaylorMade caps and umbrellas. The silent and live auctions featured an array of fabulous items donated by supporters, including the chance to play golf with Anton at Wentworth, a four-ball with lunch at Woburn, and a two-night stay at the five-star Bovey Castle Hotel and Spa in Dartmoor.
A deeper meaning
Midway through the celebrations, guests were reminded of the day’s deeper meaning as Tom Martin shared his family’s powerful story. When his daughter Annie underwent life-saving open heart surgery, Tom and his wife found comfort and support at Rainbow House, one of our ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the country. Now six and thriving, Annie’s story was a poignant reminder of the difference your support makes. Tom said:
“I’m a terrible golfer, but I love watching and playing. In his emotional thank-you speech after winning the 2025 Masters, Rory McIlroy talked about the team behind him — his family, his caddie, his supporters. I think of The Sick Children’s Trust as the caddie that stands by you at the hardest of times.”
We’re so grateful to Tom for sharing his experience, and to everyone who made this unforgettable day possible.
Special thanks, as always, to Anton, whose commitment and charisma have helped raise over £250,000 since becoming our ambassador in 2023. To mark the milestone, we presented Anton with a personalised golf polo and a framed picture.
Big thanks also to photographer Lindsay Cook, who was on hand to capture some wonderful images of the day, which you can see here.
