Charity of the Year: QBE
QBE employees raised enough money to keep two of our ‘Homes from Home’ open for an entire year
In January 2015 The Sick Children’s Trust was delighted to become ‘Charity of the Year’ partner of the QBE Foundation. The partnership was a huge success. An original target of £100,000 was far exceeded, with the final fundraising total reaching an incredible £225,000!

Robert Nias, Former Chairman of the Foundation said: “What a fantastic effort in producing the Foundation’s most successful partnership to date and what a benchmark for the future. The Sick Children’s Trust clearly captured the hearts and minds of staff, to whom a huge thank you must go for all their time and many varied efforts. The reward for us all is knowing that this partnership alone will help provide accommodation for families with seriously sick children for over 8,000 nights.”

The partnership kicked off with visits to all of the QBE offices in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Chelmsford, Stafford, Manchester, Leeds, and Glasgow to meet and engage the key charity representatives and plan for the year ahead.

And QBE employees got right behind the partnership. In the Spring their talented bakers donned their aprons, in support of our Big Chocolate Tea and then went on to walk the streets of The City in fancy dress for our City Takeover bucket collection.

Everything from pub quizzes to dress down days followed, but when the Summer came around, teams of QBE paddlers were excited to take to the water to compete in the Kingston Dragon Boat Challenge. Whilst they enjoyed the Surrey sunshine, another QBE team braved the cold Icelandic air to tackle a challenging Iceland trek, raising an incredible £15,000. Their family room sponsorship plaque is proudly displayed at Eckersley House in Leeds. 
In the Autumn, there was The Great Wall of China climb and in October a 15-strong team of QBE runners took part in the Royal Park’s Half Marathon, taking the total raised by all runs across the year to a phenomenal £27,000.

Later in November, the ExCo team took part in our ‘Executive Sleepover’, where the senior executives were sponsored by their teams and departments to sleep in QBE reception for the night, (some in fetching branded onesies!). This event alone raised a fantastic £25,000.

There was also a committed engagement outside fundraising, as QBE employees got behind our work by volunteering at many of our houses. From painting and cooking, to Christmas tree decorating, we were delighted to see that over the course of the partnership, QBE employees donated 420 hours of their time to various volunteering projects.

Finally, after an incredible year of fundraising, QBE hosted the annual ‘Trade Credit and Political Risk Dinner’, where leaders in the industry all met to celebrate the past year. Boosted by a brilliant auction and an emotional speech by QBE employee and former Sick Children’s Trust house user Peter Sewell, the evening was a huge success. They were thrilled to raise more than previous years with a total of £48,500.
